Action Against Burglary
Age Concern and Help the Aged are helping older people to take simple measures this winter to feel more secure at home.

It’s important to remember that older people are no more at risk of burglary than other people. In fact‚ the government has stated that the number of burglaries committed since 1997 has fallen by 55%*. However‚ the impact of burglary‚ or just the fear that it might happen to them‚ can be more significant for older people.

Working with the Home Office and other partners‚ they are hoping to minimise older people’s apprehensions. They are providing information‚ reassurance and a chance for people to discuss their concerns through a series of events such as roadshows and training sessions.

They have also produced a leaflet, entitled "Your Security", which provides valuable advice on safety and security at and away from home.

It covers topics such as:

• how to beat bogus callers
• deterring casual thieves
• protecting your belongings
• personal safety when out and about.

It also includes a security checklist that can be torn out and pinned to a fridge, and has contact details for organisations that can provide further information and advice.

Age Concern and Help the Aged has teamed up with the Home Office to help older people, their friends and family, to take simple measures to make themselves feel more secure at home.

If you know of anyone who would like a copy of the leaflet, please ring the FREE information line, 0800 00 99 66, to request one or download here
